Understanding Subtext

Not everything your character says is on the surface. Subtext—the underlying meaning behind the words—adds depth and complexity to your performance. It's the hidden emotions, thoughts, and intentions that lie beneath the dialogue, offering a deeper layer of storytelling. As an actor, it’s your responsibility to explore and understand what your character is truly feeling, even if they’re not saying it outright. This means paying attention to body language, tone of voice, and moments of silence, as these often communicate more than words. By embracing subtext, you can transform a simple line into a moment of emotional depth, making your portrayal feel more authentic and resonant.
